I develop my work in a perspective of resistance by and as practice. I refer to semiotic terrorism, détournements and other specto-situationist tactics in order to subvert the materials and concepts of power, alienation and oppression.

In the Survival Virus de Survie project (1991-1999) I investigated money, notions of exchange and institutional representation. This project and its many conceptual variations was rooted in daily activity, that consisted of counterstamping all of my own paper currency, and then recording the serial number of each stamped bills. The infected bills were put back in circulation. The concept articulated was one of a virus; an organism that reproduces itself from its own genetic code, the code here being the serial numbers of the bills that were subsequently re-used in the creation of artworks.

In 1999 I started to work as an anarcho-utopian Avant-Garde groupuscule. L’Internationale Virologie Numismatique is a disorganisation dedicated to the study, development, conservation and dissemination of counterstamped currencies. The Idea is to demonstrate the possibilties of numismatic virology and thus creating the bases of a fictional ‘movement’. The IVN is more largely involved in the destruction of three great oppressors of reality : TIME, MONEY and SPACE.

Self-Thaught, Mathieu Beauséjour has been presenting his installation work since the mid-90s. He also practices intervention and publishes multiples. His projects Survival Virus de Survie (1991-1999) and l’Internationale Virologie Numismatique (1999 - ) have been shown in Canada, France, Great-Britain, Germany and Serbia. He has received recognition by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. He was granted residencies in Paris in 2000 (Canadian Cultural Center / Quartier Éphémère) and in London in 2004 (Canada Council for the Arts / SpaceStudios). Beauséjour is also a cultural worker, an anarcho-utopist and a zoo keeper.
